A cyst that keeps refilling, stays tender to the touch, or grows slowly over months is not something that resolves with topical treatment or patience alone. The friction from athletic gear, outdoor layers, and the active clothing that comes with the lifestyle in Dane County can make existing cysts more irritated and more noticeable through every season. Many patients live with cysts for years, managing the discomfort and visibility without knowing that a quick, clinical in-office procedure can often remove them in a single appointment.
At VIVE Med Spa, we provide cyst treatment in Verona, WI, for patients throughout Fitchburg, Madison, Middleton, Oregon, Belleville, and New Glarus. Treatment is performed by the medical provider following a clinical evaluation to confirm the nature of the growth and the most appropriate approach.
A cyst is a closed, sac-like structure that forms beneath the skin and fills with fluid, sebum, keratin, or other material. The most common types seen in a clinical aesthetics setting include epidermoid cysts and sebaceous cysts, both of which develop in or near the skin’s surface.
Epidermoid cysts form when keratin accumulates beneath the skin, often following minor trauma or a blocked hair follicle. Sebaceous cysts develop from obstructed sebaceous glands. Both present as smooth, round lumps that are freely movable under the skin, range from a few millimeters to several centimeters, and may become tender, inflamed, or infected if left untreated.
Cysts develop for a range of reasons:
Obstructions in hair follicles or sebaceous glands prevent material from being shed from the skin surface.
A small cut, abrasion, or surgical incision can cause skin cells to become implanted beneath the surface and multiply.
Elevated androgen levels increase sebaceous gland activity and can contribute to cyst formation in some patients.
Patients with persistent acne or oily skin are more prone to follicular occlusion, which can progress to cyst formation over time.
Some patients have a familial predisposition to developing epidermoid or pilar cysts.
Clinical evaluation is warranted if:
Any growth that appears rapidly, feels irregular, or does not match the typical presentation of a benign cyst is referred for further evaluation before treatment.
At VIVE Med Spa, cyst assessment and treatment are performed by the medical provider. All growths are evaluated clinically before any procedure is performed.
Benign Lesion Removal (Cryotherapy)
For surface-level or smaller sebaceous cysts, cryotherapy applies liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the cyst tissue. The treated area scabs and sheds over 1 to 2 weeks. Any cyst that appears atypical or inflamed is assessed individually, and the appropriate management is discussed before treatment begins.
Some small, non-inflamed cysts remain stable and do not require treatment. However, cysts rarely resolve completely without removal because the sac wall must be addressed to prevent refilling. A clinical evaluation will clarify whether your cyst warrants treatment.
Cryotherapy produces a brief stinging sensation during liquid nitrogen application. Most patients tolerate the procedure without significant discomfort, and no anesthesia is required for standard presentations.
Cysts treated with cryotherapy have a low recurrence rate when the treatment fully disrupts the cyst wall. Patients with a history of recurring cysts in the same location may require additional sessions.
An acutely infected cyst is not treated with cryotherapy until the infection has resolved. Your provider will discuss appropriate management for an infected presentation, which may include referral before any in-office removal is performed.
Up to 5 cysts can be treated in a 15-minute session at $90. More than 5 sessions exceeding 15 minutes are $180.
