Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin condition brought about by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), a member of the poxvirus family. It presents as small, flesh-colored to pearly white dome-shaped papules with a characteristic central dimple, known as umbilication. Lesions range from 1 to 5 millimeters and may appear anywhere on the body, most commonly on the trunk, arms, legs, and face.
The infection spreads through direct skin contact, shared towels or clothing, and contact with contaminated surfaces. It is particularly common among children, athletes in close-contact sports, and adults in situations of skin-to-skin contact.
MCV is highly contagious and spreads easily through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces.

Liquid nitrogen is applied to each lesion, destroying the infected tissue through targeted freezing. The treated lesions blister, scab, and shed over 1 to 2 weeks. Multiple sessions may be required depending on the number of lesions and whether new ones develop between appointments. Treatment is performed by the medical provider following clinical evaluation.
In immunocompetent adults and children, lesions may eventually resolve without treatment, but this can take 6 to 18 months or longer. Treatment accelerates clearance and reduces the risk of ongoing spread during that window.
